I decide the plate is beyond saving. I am a bit despondent about it, because I had high hopes for this clay - it was so easy to find and dig up.
However, I now think I didn't dig deep enough and was too close to a farm gate, which plainly gets churned up. I suspect there is a bit much top soil in it. Also, the clay in the area had been used for Clephanton Brickworks. There is also a great link between the brickworks here and the Seafield Pottery, Brick and Tile works, the site where we now get our clay, in the form of a Tom Wilson who moved from here to Seafield. More information can be found here.
